Here are 6 derm-approved home remedies to get rid of acne scars the natural way.

While breakouts continue to rule the ‘gravest skincare concern’ domain, acne scars are quick to follow. Some experts have gone ahead and claimed that it’s in fact easier to get rid of acne, than having to deal with the scars it leaves behind.

“How you get rid of an acne scar depends entirely on the type of scar you’re dealing with. If you’re referring to a post-acne scar that is a pink-ish red, or tan-dark brown colour, the solutions vary vastly from the scars that result from dents in your skin,” states Paula Begoun, founder of Paula’s Choice.

The most ‘typical’ acne scar is the post-acne mark left behind after a pimple heals. Regardless of the colour of this mark, how fast it goes away depends on how well you take care of your skin. If you take care, well and good. However, if you make use of sensitizing, drying, abrasive, or harsh skincare products, along with constant exposure to sun damage and pollution, the scar can last for weeks and even get worse!

ALOE VERA

“Aloe Vera has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce the appearance of acne and prevent breakouts. Moreover, it contains plenty of water and is an excellent moisturiser for naturally glowing skin!” states Dr Simal Soin, Aayna Clinic.

“Rub fresh Aloe Vera gel on your scar, in circular motions, for about 10 minutes. Leave the gel on the skin for 30 minutes and wash off later, with cool water. One must practice this twice, daily,” suggests Dr Rinky Kapoor, Cosmetic Dermatologist.

GREEN TEA

“Green tea contains a high concentration of anti-oxidants that help the skin heal, by breaking down chemicals that are responsible for damaging healthy skin cells. It also helps clean the waste that is built up inside the skin’s pores, eliminating the possibility of further breakouts,” says Dr Simal Soin.

Dip a green tea bag in hot water for about 3 minutes, after which remove the bag and let it cool. Add honey to the green tea leaves and apply this mixture on your face for approximately 20 minutes. Rinse your face with cool water and pat dry.

VITAMIN-E OIL

Vitamin E oil is know for moisturising and nourishing the skin, while adding to your glow and making the skin smooth. It also reduces hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and wrinkles. “Apply vitamin E oil on the scar and massage gently for 10 minutes. After 20 minutes, wash your face with warm water. Practice this thrice, daily,” advocates Dr Rinky Kapoor.

COCONUT OIL

A good-old hack to reduce scars, coconut oil has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties, and is enriched with vitamin E and lauric acid which help make the skin smooth. “Warm some coconut oil and massage it on your scars for 5-10 minutes. Leave on overnight, or for a few hours, before washing your face with warm water. Practice this every alternate day,” suggests Dr Kapoor.

POTATO

“The high starch content in potato also helps with scars and blemishes. Cut some potato slices and rub them gently over the scars,” says Dr Kapoor. Alternatively, you could also use potato juice for the same. Let the juice dry completely before washing. “Lemon may be used on the face, in a similar manner,” she adds.

ONION JUICE

Onion comprises of bioflavonoids and is known to reduce the appearance of pimple scars only after a few weeks of use. Dr Kapoor recommends gently dabbing and massaging the onion extract onto the scar. Let it dry, and wash afterwards. Onion also works well when it comes to combating acne.

“Most importantly, its vital that you don’t pick or scratch away at the blemishes in any way that can cause scabs,” states Paula Begoun. It is also extremely crucial to protect your skin from UV rays, by applying a lightweight sunscreen of SPF 30 or greater, to promote all aspects of skin healing.
