Popping a pimple is the biggest beauty mistake you can ever make. Here’s why it’s a big NO-NO!

What is the first thought that comes to your mind when a ruthless pimple is trying to mar your face? Don’t you feel like popping it right away? Now if you really have that urge, our request would be to drop that plan right away, because according to dermatologists, popping a pimple is the biggest beauty mistake you could ever commit.

A pimple is the result of oil blockage in the pores of the skin. The dirt sticks to these pores and causes inflammation and growth of bacteria in the pores, under the hair follicles.

This results in infection that makes the skin around the pore sensitive and even painful, and that’s how the pus-filled tip appears on the surface. Refrain from popping it, even your will power gives up on you.

“Blackheads, whiteheads, papules, modules, cysts, and pustules are all different kinds of pimples and none should be popped in any case,” says Dr Rinky Kapoor, who is a cosmetic dermatologist & dermato-surgeon at The Esthetic Clinics.

She pin-pointed these five reasons why you should NEVER pop a pimple:

1. You aggravate that pimple by popping it
When you squeeze the skin around the pimple, then the risk of pushing the debris, oil, and the bacteria deeper under the skin increases. On top of it, the bacteria on your fingers also joins the mix, and leads to new kinds of pimples stemming from the deep layers of skin.

2. You are creating more room for infection
“As you push the pimple to get the pus out, you might think that you have cleared the whole area but in reality, there is a chance that you have left some pus in and it will become the breeding ground for more inflamed, and bigger pimples,” she adds.

3. Popping a pimple can also lead to scarring and pitting
Premature popping of a pimple takes away from the healing. This results in loss of tissue leading to permanent scars. The more you scratch and pick the site of a pimple, the more you raise the risk of scarring. On top of it, it can also lead to pitting if you didn’t stop it right away.

4. You can be a victim of hyperpigmentation
“Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is one of the common side effects of bursting a pimple. Hyperpigmentation can take months or even years to clear,” warns Dr Kapoor.

5. You will end up inviting more pimples
Yes, that’s true. The pus that you squeeze out of a pimple gets in touch with the skin. The bacteria, oil, and trapped debris blocks the pores and hair follicles, leading to more pimples.

“I would recommend that you let the pimple run its life span, which is usually 3-7 days, and give the skin the chance to heal. But if you have still popped it, then make sure you clean the area with antibacterial face wash, and apply dermatologist-recommended cream,” she concludes.

So, leave that pimple alone and instead of popping it right away, think of using some home hacks that can help you instead.
